Orthodontic Treatment

What is it?

Orthodontics is the speciality of dentistry that is concerned with the study and treatment of malocclusions (improper bites), which may be a result of tooth irregularity, disproportionate jaw relationships, or both. Orthodontic treatment can focus on dental displacement only, or can deal with the control and modification of facial growth. In the latter case it is better defined as "dentofacial orthopaedics". Orthodontic treatment can be carried out for purely aesthetic reasons with regards to improving the general appearance of patients' teeth. However, there are orthodontists who work on reconstructing the entire face rather than focusing exclusively on teeth.

What will my dentist do?

In most cases you will be referred to a specialist orthodontist.

Each case is different, so special x-rays are taken to assess the relationship of the jaws and teeth to each other, the amount of overcrowding and the movement needed to obtain an acceptable functional and awsthetic result.

Once an assessment is made, the type of treatment can be decided.

This can include extractions to make space, removeble appliances or fixed appliances.

Treatment can often take 2 years or more.

Adults can benefit from orthodontic treatment as well as children.

It is often associated with other forms af treatment to get the best result.

What are the benefits?

Crooked teeth are more difficult to clean, and therefore more prone to decay and gum problems, so having the treatment reduces the risks of losing teeth early.
